Chinatown Complex Urban Design, Los Angeles
A strategic urban solution to encourage events and actions in space
The old Chinatown in Los Angeles has long been disconnected since the majority of Chinatown has moved to San Gabriel in mid 1990s because of the economic depression. For this project ,we are ambitious to connect Chinatown to downtown CBD, regenerate the under-valued area and community, and exploit the full potential of Chinese identity. By bringing opportunities for social interaction, inclusiveness and diversity of users, it becomes a flexible space that hosts local communities and tourists, giving space back to residents and future development of the city.
Interstitial spaces, order and density are key Chinese languages for this project based on our initial research. We believe in Bernard Tschumi's quote: "Architecture is not just about form and patterns, but about events, actions and what happens in spaces."
